Sea wall to Herne Bay — 12 km return, flat
Out along the front, past the beach huts at Tankerton, along the sea wall to Herne Bay. Almost entirely flat, shared with walkers, so it's a slow ride rather than a fast one. The prevailing wind is from the southwest, which means the way back is usually the hard half.
Crab and Winkle Way to Canterbury — 12 km each way, one real climb
The old railway line to Canterbury, mostly traffic-free, gravel in the middle section. One genuine climb out of Whitstable at the start, about 70 metres, and then it settles. The nicest ride from here and the one we recommend most.
Seasalter and the marshes — 20 km return, flat and exposed
West along the coast towards Faversham. Flat, quiet, and completely exposed — there is no shelter anywhere on this route. Wonderful on a still day, miserable in a northeasterly, and we will tell you which it is before you set off.
Blean loop — 28 km, hilly by Kent standards
Inland through the woods, a loop back via Chestfield. Proper climbs, quiet lanes, and a surface that varies. The road bikes are for this one. Allow longer than the distance suggests.
Practical notes
| Wind | Southwest most days. Plan the outward leg into it if you can |
| Tides | The sea wall floods on the highest tides. The tide table by the door is current |
| Surface | Crab and Winkle is gravel in places. Hybrids handle it, road bikes tolerate it |
| Busiest | Sea wall on a sunny Sunday. Go early or go inland |
